This mob did more melee damage then spellcasting, so shield + 1-handed weapon it was. Basicly you should run to the other side of the hut whenever he's casting a spell. This way you avoid line of sight, and ofcourse, mobs can't shoot through obstacles like the hut.

Also if you have access to Zenistar pop a disk over the hacked Ambulas so you can clear mobs.
